We severely lack decor (and furniture but that’s another story). Dressing up the walls of a whole house can prove a costly endeavor and I am brainstorming for frugal but also personal ways to add art and decor on our walls.
My first attempt on painting some modern art that we could actually use in our home, served well to prove that my mom had it ALL wrong. She always believed – unwaveringly -I am some kind of mini-Picasso with great artistic skills. Well, this is what I made before I had my daughter cover the whole thing with black paint to hide my shame:
In stark contrast, in the following photo are two of my daughter’s first paintings. Her abstract art that is soooo much better than mine. Beats both what I could make and the “came with the frame” prints that had stayed in those frames for over a year. While I had already hang them on the walls. Yep. A year with two frames that advertised walmart (if I remember correctly).
A canvas, adhesive vinyl letters, and a few drips of paint helped correct my previous attempt on art. In this groundbreaking installment, TwoPlusCute – and especially The Cute part – present *dun dun dunnnn* the Be Your Own Kind of Awesome Canvas Poster.
Dripped a tad of black paint on the canvas I used for my failed attempt on creating art.
The Cute obliged to apply it thoroughly with a foam brush (oh, oh, quality mommy-daughter time!):
And then she thought it needed some distressing and proceeded to smudge the paint off. With her hands.
I let her, after all, we established she knows more about art than I do. Plus, I scored bonus mommy points for staying calm:
Once the canvas dried, I added the motto in white vinyl letters and the word “awesome” in shiny mirror letters.
~~> BE YOUR OWN KIND OF AWESOME <~~
Let’s talk about the motto for a second. It came to me when I was deep in thought while writing this post and I decided that I did feel and believe everybody can be awesome. Their own, unique kind of awesome. The awesome driver, the awesome scavenger, the awesome “I make things with scraps”, the awesome mother/father, the awesome crafter, etc
We are all awesome in some way and I did not want to forget that.
After we were done admiring it from all angles (and shooting a gazillion photos with bad exposure), I felt it needed something extra. Since I did not have any sparkly nail polish (what? it’s paint and they come with their own brushes!), I went with antique gold paint – it doesn’t hurt that gold is one of the strongest design and decor trends for this year:
More interesting now:
=> If you plan on making a poster with adhesive letters, keep in mind they might get unstuck eventually – you might want to mod podge your masterpiece.
- We put something on that empty wall
- It is a very meaningful reminder (at least to me)
- It’s personal
- And I made it with The Cute (you know: bonus mommy points and happiness)
I do feel it is lacking a frame…Heck, it’s fine, there are so many scraps of wood in our basement, I am certain we can DIY a frame. 🙂
What’s your current favorite motto? I assume you have many (I do!) but, which one popped first in your mind when you read my question?
ps. Spring is coming, time to make a wreath?
ps 2. Don’t forget: Be Your Own Kind of Awesome!
